This position is in the Bridge Maintenance Crew of the Facility Services Department of the Port of New Orleans Maintenance Division and reports directly to a Port Facility Maintenance Foreman.

Acting under the supervision of the Port Facility Maintenance Foreman, responsible for electrical and mechanical maintenance and repairs of four moveable bridges along the IHNC: St. Claude Ave., Florida Ave., Almonaster Ave., and Seabrook.

This position participates in the required PORT training program and obtains additional training in order to facilitate the efficient performance duties and/or required tasks. Performs all duties in accordance with Port safety policies. This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year.

The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid Louisiana Driver’s License, Class E, or other state equivalent, and be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment required to fulfill the needs of the position and the PORT. The incumbent is required to have knowledge of the use of a UHF radio, which requires proper radio etiquette. The incumbent shall utilize a telephone, cell phone, two-way communication device, computer, and email to facilitate communications if required. The incumbent must be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. Incumbent may be required to work overtime. May also require working immediately before, after, or during a disaster.

90%        Bridge Maintenance Duties
Incumbent is responsible for performing maintenance of four movable bridges. This includes, but is not limited to, preventative maintenance, repairs, and equipment replacement of mechanical, electrical, and structural components of the bridges, bridge operator houses, associated traffic control devices, and other items related to the bridges. Cleans gear rooms, disposes trash from around bridges. Maintains work areas and washrooms in a clean and orderly condition. Installs and maintains electrical equipment such as motors, starters, relays, panel boxes, switches, coils for single and three phase systems on bridges. Installs alters, maintains and repairs electrical cable, conduit, public address systems, traffic signs, telephones, floodlights, and other electrical fixtures and equipment on bridges. Greases gears in machine room. Services main bearing and landing shoes with grease. Starts auxiliary propane engine to operate bridge. Check air compressor oil, cleans filter and drains moisture from volume tank. Checks oil in bushing of motors in machine room. Assists with routine and emergency inspections. Ensures adequate and proper communication of maintenance activities by self or others to bridge operators. Works as part of bridge call-out team.

5%          Operator Duties
Incumbent shall become certified to operate all four movable bridges and regularly perform
openings at each bridge to maintain proficiency. In certain circumstances, incumbent may be required to fill in as a bridge operator until a permanent relief arrives such as when a regular operator calls out or has to leave unexpectedly at the last minute.

5%          Other Duties, Including Emergency Support

Incumbent is required to perform a variety of tasks and assignments, as directed by the
Supervisor, necessary to fulfill the mission of Facility Services Department and/or Port Maintenance Division.

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of experience in building construction trades, building maintenance, or in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of water vessels, movable bridges, or other equipment such as heavy, mobile, mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic.

 

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in building construction trades, building maintenance, or in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of water vessels, movable bridges, or other equipment such as heavy, mobile, mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on a month for month basis.

 

NOTE:

Custodial building maintenance is not qualifying.

 

Examples of building construction trades include cabinetmaker, carpenter, concrete finisher, electrician, HVAC controls technician, HVAC mechanic, ironworker, millwright, painter, pipefitter, plasterer, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, roofer, sheet metal worker, steamfitter, tile setter and welder.

 

Examples of building maintenance include Maintenance Repairer 1/2, B/G/E Maintenance Repairer 1/2 and Maintenance Repair Foreman.

 

Examples of repair/maintenance of mechanical equipment include Operating Engineer 1/2, auto mechanic, Mobile Equipment Maintenance Mechanic, Mobile Equipment Overhaul Mechanic and Mobile Equipment Master Mechanic.

To perform advanced level duties in the repair and maintenance of Port office buildings, properties, facilities, docks, railroads, transit sheds, grounds, and appliances and to operate and maintain the mobile equipment used in these maintenance operations.
